Just as a general point about buying shares, a very good way of deciding whether it's worth investing in a company is to have a look at the company's product and see whether you would buy it. If not, then why on earth would you buy shares?

Sainsbury's (in common with M&S, and probably Boots and Woolies) is a shop I no longer use. It's neither cheap, nor is the quality and range particularly good. If I want cheap I go to Asda. If I want good quality I go to Waitrose (or rather my wife does, because I generally go for cheap). Sainsbury's falls between two stools and is meandering about trying to fix things without a clear direction. Until it fixes this there is little prospect of an improvemen IMHO.

I agree with Pal, by the way. Many people persuade themselves they are skilled investors, when most of the time they're just lucky - this was particularly true during the boom before 2000 when a great many people were patting themselves on the back for their skill just on the basis they were making a profit from a ramping stock market from which random picks were as good as anything. As with gambling you can improve your chances by knowing a little about the subject, but fundamentally for every gain there is a loss. And winners shout louder than losers.

I agree shares investing is high risk and either

    long-long-long-long-long term

    or short-term speculations (0-6 months)

But always either way high risk, very easy to lose 99% on a spec stock !
  • Buy shares - yes, but make sure that you buy several different ones. In other words, don't put all your eggs in one basket. That way, when one doesn't do so well, you're not risking your future - another one may do well and so prop the portfolio up.

But hey, i'm probably telling granny how to suck eggs...

    ISA Profit since Jan 1st 2015 - 98.2% (updated 1 Dec 2020)
  • Considering the opinion that many people don't want to discuss shares on this board its turned out to be rather a good discussion!

Meanwhile takeover rumours persist though Ive still not taken the plunge!
    Waddle you do eh?

as a part-time trader suggest this site for "serious budding traders"

    https://www.trade2win.co.uk

Note there is a huge difference between investing and trading. This site is more focused to the technical side of trading.

  • Being a very knowledgeable investor I invested a tidy sum in each of 6 shares the Sunday Times gave as top tips for the year 2000(or was it 2001)

Well Sainsbury turned out to be easily the best because they have only lost 30% of their value. 2 dotcom companies went into liquidation.
