iPhone and transferring to a new iPhone

I have a working iPhone that is on its way out, so I need to transfer to a new iPhone. I never actually completed phone set up. I have not purchased anything with it. I do not have email on it. I do not have a password and I didn't ever use the code.
If I transfer the Sim over to a new iPhone I assume I can use it.
I am assuming the phone specific things will be on the iCloud somewhere?
Any help would be appreciated

If you have built castles in the air, your work should not be lost; that is where they should be. Now put the foundations under them

For an iPhone you must have an iCloud account - even if it's xxx.xxx@icloud.com
your stuff will be there IF you have enabled back-ups to the iCloud account.
Check you iPhone settings for backups.
what you need to do is then on the new phone start it up, and when asked you want to "create from back-up" - you'll then sign-in.
The SIM is not your link to data storage - your iCloud account is.2 -
Thank you @DE_612183
You are right, I noticed a cloud account that is exactly a name, a number @iCloud.com
I will check my iPhone for backups
When you say I'll then sign-in? in the format as shown on phone...name, number @iCloud.com?
What exactly is my SIM transferring? The phone number? Anything else?
Thank you again. (I'm sure they sound like very silly questions to someone more IT minded, so apologies for that)If you have built castles in the air, your work should not be lost; that is where they should be. Now put the foundations under them

The sim will only transfer the number - you may have contacts stored on the sim but I don't think that happens with iPhone - it will be on the iCloud account.
You can also try logging into your iCloud account using a computer - if you have one here: https://www.icloud.com/
You can test your password etc and see whats stored.2 -
Ok, thank you @DE_612183 I now understand re the sim
I never set a password on my phone
I am going to check my phone to see when/if/how my phone is backing up.

Or you can do a manual backup of the old phone to a PC using iTunes then restore that backup to the new phone.1
