Kitchen tap

Options
Are all kitchen taps of the same size ?

One of the handles (that controls the cold water) has just broken on my kitchen tap, making it unusable.

I am thinking of buying a replacement from a hardware store and then getting in a plumber to fix it in.

Are they all the same size/fitting or are there loads of different options? The one on there now is a mixer tap (with handles on either side to control hot and cold).

The one in the sink looks like this ->

The one I am thinking of getting to replace it is ->

The first tap that you posted a pic of looks like a quarter turn tap and so uses cartridges, you can buy replacement ones.

The second tap uses regular washers and a head gear.

Replacing a kitchen tap is difficult and the fittings underneath will be different.

Your best option would be to replace the cartridge in the original one..

If you take the picture to the plumbers they should be able to get you a new ceramic disk cartridge to repair your existing tap.

The OP said that the handle had broken off !!!

Yes the second tap should fit OK in place of the broken one, check the fittings are the same before installing.

The handle is connected to the cartridge/ceramic disk.

He does not need to replace the whole tap now does he!

For normal taps you can but a tap reviver, which is the head gear and new handles. You should be able to get something similar for ceramic disk taps.
