Santander Current account blocking every payment for security

hi there

am I the only one that is getting a stupid amount of fraud security when I go to make regular payments to pay a credit card that I have been paying for years and year. Or transferring from one account to another. I have had 2 in 2 days, in the last 6 months countless times, anything over £5000 and it blocks.

to make it worse, having spoken to fraud department, and gone through security, saying my credit card app transferred me to my santander app to make the payment, which would of been through my recognised device already logged with both card apps, and I would of used face ID to log in, it still is not enough for the fraud department and they have now now gone to the back office which could take upto 48 hrs.
SO I cannot make payments or access my accounts.
The previous person I spoke to the day before admitted to their software being too sensitive and they are doing something about it.

Is there anything in your activity that might arouse interest? Deposits to or from abroad? Anything related to crypto? Deposits from third parties e.g., related to selling things on Facebook Marketplace?

When you get back online check your payment limit. The default is £5k. You can increase it yourself up to £25k. Though I would have thought the Santander staff would check / suggest this. But offer it nonetheless just in case given you say specifically that it's only >£5k that the issue arises.

Why do you just not use Santander app to make payment?

    Are you using open banking?

Pay your credit card by direct debit, no worries of account fraud holds then

Sam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:

People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.

If it's been happening for months, why not switch to another bank?

I make much bigger payments and do not have problems. You wrote: "saying my credit card app transferred me to my santander app to make the payment". That sounds very odd to me. Perhaps they do not like it. I just use a desktop PC to make payments. My credit card with another bank is paid by Direct Debit, but I do not expect that I would have problems paying by another method.

It sounds like Open Banking to me, not odd at all. It might still be new to some but it is an increasingly common method for making payments, employed in many situations, e.g. making deposits into savings accounts, paying your tax bill, or indeed, paying your credit card. I can, for example, pay my Natwest credit card that way, from Santander or from just about any other UK bank. It is massively simpler and safer than paying with a Faster Payment as you don’t need to bother with sort codes, account numbers and Reference codes.

I have been making Open Banking from Santander for some time now without problems, usually for 3 or 4 digit amounts but occasionally a 5 digit one. My payment limit is set to the max £25k. The difficulties experienced by the OP seem to be specific to them.

you could try paying your credit card by faster payments i.e logon to the Santander app set of the payment to your credit card and do it that way just in a way you pay any other bill
