Start date of JSA

Hello,
i hope someone can help me, my DD was made redundant on 24th dec, she worked that day until 6pm. and then we went away for the xmas period and came home on the 28th, She then called the job center helpline and put in a claim for JSA. They said the claim would start from the day she made the call (28th) does this mean she will lose out on 3/4 days of JSA? if so this seems a little unfair as they were closed for several days and she didn't have her details (NI number etc) on her to call while away.
Can anyone clarify for me when the claim will start and if it starts on 28th, would she have a right to appeal?
Thanks

My thoughts are that they'd expect her to have taken the necessary details away with her so she could get the claim in sooner.

Was she given notice of the redundancy?

Hello ! I live on this board too !!

The JSA would start on the1st day she could notify the job centre, but in any new claim ( unless she claimed in the last 12 weeks ) the first 3 days are not counted anyway. Sorry.

  • Thanks for the advice (hi DD:j )
We knew she was being made redundant, but didn't think she could put in a claim before hand, and didn't think, that with the holidays and closure etc that they would bother about the few days..still you live and learn, and as DD says the first three days don't count
    Thanks for your help:T

The 3 waiting days will start from the day she made the claim i.e. the 28th, not from the 24th. When your daughter attends the jobcentre for her interview she can ask for her claim to be backdated to the 24th, but she will have to demonstrate she was looking for work from the 25th!!!!, and show she had 'good cause' for not claiming earlier, which she may have as they were shut until the 28th.

    hope that helps
  • Thanks Real....umm looking for work on xmas day..oh yes the whole day was spent scouring the papers, internet and local shops..not!
Will give it a try but its not the end of the world if it comes to nothing.
    Thanks for the info!

They were actually open from the Thursday 27th so if she had rang on this day the claim would have probably been treated as straightforward from the 25th which was the first day of unemployment.
