Claiming on home insurance

We have discovered a water leak that is causing damage and will need to claim on home insurance policy. However, our existing policy is due to end on 19th August and we have already taken the renewal with a different company. So am wondering should we put in claim now with old policy or just wait till after 19th and claim on new policy? Would it make any difference? Thanks in advance for any advice.

You need to claim on the policy that you have now. Otherwise the new insurer will be wondering why you are claiming on something you didn’t inform them about. They will ask when you first noticed the problem.
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.
  • As above.

And you should tell the new insurer that there has been a claim - you will probably find that the price changes.
