Repointing

Options
My husband has cleaned our windows this morning and noticed some repainting needs doing urgently around some upstairs windows. He is adamant we can claim for this on our house insurance, I don't think we can as surely it's maintenance/wear and tear, can anyone advise? Thanks

tell him to show you the clause in the policy T&C that he thinks (incorrectly) would allow that.
if he remains adamant then serve him cold dinners for the next week for having wasted everyone's time

When did you last have them painted?  Insurers do look very carefully at maintenance.

  • Have no idea how it's become damaged, I don't even want to call and ask them as just the query will increase the premium. House was built in70's and is the original mortar, is that a defect or wear and tear?

No way would the insurance company entertain a claim for repointing, for a 50 year house this would be clearly in the expected owner maintenance area.

I would have thought it would be something that would invalidate your insurance (house not being maintained) rather than something that could be claimed.

Unless something pretty unusual has occurred to cause it, it's most definitely wear & tear, a routine maintenance job.
On the upside, it's not a difficult DIY job, as long as you're OK on a ladder.  Time consuming, definitely, but simple enough to do.
