Donating to charity using 1p mobile text message

I have some 1p mobile credit that I won't be using for calls or data so I decided to make some charity donations by text. Every one I tried failed (after a delay) with a message saying "you are unable to use this service, please contact your mobile provider". When I work out how, I will contact them! Until then I have questions...
Is this just something 1p mobile has decided to do, or is it usual with pay as you go services? Will I be able to donate to any charity this way (I tried four)? If I can't donate, what can I do with this credit?

It probably has to be fixed amounts (IE you probably can't donate £1.99) - does that help?
I know at church it's £5 or low multiples we can donate by text, but I've never done it so no experience.
