  • have posted something bit like this before ...

wanted a posh coffee machine for OH bday and found the one for £210 at JL Cheadle store. The man was really off about selling it and tried to push other makes. [Turns out this had been price matched from £300 at a local manchester shop.]

So put off by his attitude we thought no and went home.

Some online research later revealed it was a very good buy (£300 online at JL, price runner etc £280-345) so I called the shop, was served by a lovely telephone operator who did the sale at £210 and told me it was a local price match. She arranged a 'no cost to me' postage and it came the next day.

She told me that online has no price match policy and I gathered that local stores often have these deals - but they are usually kept quiet. Not hidden or refused if you ask, just that other items are pushed until the price match ends.

It doesn't just happen in the sales, Sainsburys used to do own brand cream cheese which was about 38p a tub, but then it disappeared for a few weeks. Suddenly "Basics" cream cheese appeared which they didn't do before, but the price was 47p! They also started doing basics melons at 99p and then they pricematched Tesco to £1.08, I never realised before that they pricematched up as well as down.
