Unable to recover User ID via Govt Gateway

Hi, I've tried to confirm my NI contribution history but have failed to recover both my User ID and password despite using my current passport and credit history. My email is recognised by the official website.
My question is will I have to speak to the Government Helpdesk (good luck me), if so, secondly, what's the phone number and thirdly, is there another way to reset the whole thing and apply for a new UserID and have sent in post without speaking to the Helpdesk as this may be quicker?
