Reconditioned Mobile Phone.

In February of 2022 I purchased a reconditioned Apple iPhone Xr from / though Amazon. It has worked very well but last week I wanted to upgrade it but I now find that I cannot sell it because it was not successfully " data wiped " prior to it being sold. It means that it was controlled by a Company / administrator previously and mobile retailers will not accept it. I spoke originally with Amazon who advised I contact the company Grade Mobile but both Grade Mobile or amazon state that the one year guarantee has expired. I can understand if this was, for example, an electrical appliance out of guarantee but the problem with the mobile not being properly data wiped is not known by a layperson until it is to be upgraded or resold.
I am not looking for any monies to be returned and suggested that the phone be returned to Grade Mobiles for them to data wipe it and then send it back but they have refused !
I don't think you will have come up with this problem previously and I am sorry fo the long explanation, but can you advise what I can do ?

Factory reset / Hard reset it?
That should wipe everything, and leave it as if it was straight from the factory.
Plenty of instructions and videos online of how to do that for an Xr.

Can you simply do the data wipe now?
You need to wipe all your data regardless.

It’s not data wiping. The device is managed by a company or organisation. Resetting it won’t remove that. Obviously Grade Mobile don’t check devices when they reset them.

The only way to have it removed is to speak to the company that “own” it. (See here for more on the subject https://support.apple.com/en-gb/guide/deployment/welcome/web)

What you would need to do is convince the seller that it is not fit for purpose when you bought it. Show them a screenshot of the MDM profile that shows it’s a managed device.

They should either swap the device for one that isn’t managed or give you a partial refund to reflect the use you’ve had of it.
