Aldi Self Scan Checkout Vent.

My local has removed 4 checkouts and installed 8 self scans in their place.  All well and good you would think, I personally much prefer them, except they seem to be rarely working.  So more customers queuing up at the remaining 4 checkouts which they now don't seem to have enough staff to cover adequately due to the installation of the self scans :(
Don't seem to get this problem in Tesco or Asda. Anyone else have the same problem in their store ?

Works very well in my local Aldi, they have 10 self scan and 6 normal tills, they are always very efficient.

Whereas in Tesco they are too busy chatting to each other to bother with customers! IMO.

If they are new they may need time to be calibrated correctly.  The ones in our store were terrible when first installed, but now work well.

In my nearest Lidl they have 5 manned checkout tills and about 8 self scans.  Some of the time (including this morning) there is only one of the 5 manned checkout tills open.  When there are 2 manned checkout tills open (3 closed) the staff member at the manned till closest to the self scan tills has to leave frequently to attend to anyone needing help at a self scan till.  All of the self scan tills are "Card only."

Today I had only 5 items in my basket and wanted to pay by cash.  The only till open and available for cash transactions had a long queue and, as far as I could see, everyone had a trolley and most were large ones loaded with goods.
     -  Probably a Friday weekly big shop.

When I mentioned this to the girl at the self scan section she said that they might open another manned till.  I wanted to leave but some of my items in my basket were from the fridges or freezer and I did not want to put them back.  By the time I left the one till open for cash transactions had an even longer queue.  The girl at the self scan was very pleasant and helped me when my self scan till stopped scanning on my third item!

Same as the Lidl near us, shopping there is more stressful than at other stores.

The self service tills at my Aldi work very well.
It's good for me because I only ever do a basket shop and it was a real pain to have to queue behind someone with a piled high trolley.

The only problem I've encountered is if I buy an item that is bigger than the till weighing mechanism expects and it needs to be over-ridden.

There is a dedicated assistant for the self service tills.

I hate Aldi. The self service checkouts at ours only allow you to use them if you have 10 items or less.  But my bugbear is that you queue at a till and then over the loud speaker comes 'We are now opening till number 3, please queue at till number 3'. So you move to till 3 then find it takes the person opening the till ages to arrive and you would have been served faster staying in the original queue. No matter what I do in there, I am Always at the wrong till!

Yes, this happens all the time at Lidl and Aldi.

    'Till number 'x' is closing'
    'Till number 'y' is closing'

And there's already long queues at the other tills.

Yes, the food might be a bit cheaper, but it drives me insane!!
