Off-peak rate but smart meter not installed yet

I have pressed on with the electric driver tariff by British Gas. 

However the smart meter install date they have given is all the way at the end of September. 

What happens to the usage between now and then if they can’t calculate my night time usage?

I don't think you will get the lower night time rate until the smart meter is installed and working. They won't have any way of estimating your night time usage.

This from the British Gas FAQ's : 

Why do I need an electricity smart meter to sign up for your electric vehicle energy tariff?

A smart meter tells us exactly when you’re using your electricity. We need to know how much energy you’re using during the day and during the cheaper night-time hours so that we can give you an accurate bill.Without an electricity smart meter, you won’t be able to get the lower unit rate at night.

I would have thought that you would not be able to join the Electric Driver tariff until you get a smart meter installed, but I could be wrong.  If so and you are already on the Electric Drive tariff then you need to look at the Terms and Conditions.
