Uber taken money in error

I hope someone can help me. I recently subscribed to Uber One to take advantage of the free Disney+ offer. Uber took £62.11 from my credit card, which I thought was odd, as the annual fee is £59.99 so I queried this (and the fact that no code was sent to sign up for Disney+ which is a whole other issue I won’t go into here). Uber One say that I owed them £62.11 from an Uber Eats order in March 2022, so I haven’t paid for Uber One at all; the issue is that I did pay for the March 2022 order and have an email and receipt on both PayPal and the Uber Eats app to prove it but Uber One have closed my complaint as they claim it’s up to Uber Eats to respond to (which they haven’t) however they were happy to act as one organisation when Uber One took the money they think I owe Uber Eats! To add to the confusion, the original bill was £62.11 but Uber Eats hadn’t given me the agreed discount on my March 2022 order so £20 was refunded on the same day, so the total order was £42.11. What do I do now? How are they allowed to take money I don’t owe them while I’m trying to pay for a different service? No one at Uber will respond to me.

Did you do a chargeback with the card or PayPal on the original transaction? If so often that creates a debt which a company will try to recover as soon as you give that company a new payment source.

I haven’t; the original payment in 2022 was via PayPal but the money taken this week was via my credit card.

I’m afraid I don’t really understand what a chargeback is, sorry. I paid £62.11 via PayPal and was refunded £20, so £42.11 in total but don’t have any record of getting any of the £42.11 back and I hadn’t asked for any other refund, except the original £20 where they had omitted to give the correct discount, if that makes sense?

Who refunded the £20, was it from Uber, or did you do a dispute with PayPal?

If Paypal took the money from Uber to refund you, then you still have a debt with Uber.
