Universal credit migration

Options
Hi I have received a migration notice and I qualify for transitional protection however under uc I am going to lose a year of money. So one of the children on my claim is almost 18 (2 weeks time) and is going to college on a 2 year course. On tax credits I would receive them until she is 20 but on uc only until she is 19. I receive pip and lcfwra esa so when she turns 19 and is no longer entitled from a uc point of view I am going to be a in very bad financial place as I still need to support her for that final year in college?  I have heard about deferred migration but I yhink she would need to be 19....but surely they could defer me for a year as then if I migrate when she is 19 I'd then get the transition protection for the year making up what I stand to lose? Does that make sense can anyone help? Thanks

    When is your migration deadline?
It's usually 3 months after the notice is issued so will she be 19 before that deadline?
If so then you could try asking for a deferral of migration after she has turned 19.
EDIT - Sorry I misread the post, she is turning 18 shortly and not 19, so of course that doesn't apply.
Always remembering that Tax Credits will stop for everybody on 5th April 2025 anyway.
Some people will/do lose out on migration from Tax Credits simply because TCs had more lenient rules than UC.
(One of the reasons why migration is happening is to get everyone on the same rules, the UC rules).

I can't quite remember the date but Tax Credits will fully end at some point, I think it's something like April 2025.  So even if you were able to get a deferral (not sure if it's even possible in your case), there is still an absolute deadline regardless of how old your children would be on the date Tax Credits completely end.

I believe you need to change the way you view this.  You are not losing a year, you are loosing your TC.  As your daughter is not yet 18 and deferral is for 19 yr olds, I doubt you will be able to defer migration (but if you dont ask you dont get) so either way your TC will stop either on migration to UC, at the end of the your migration period should you choose not to apply for UC, or if you manage to defer April 2025.

If you choose not to apply for UC, your TC will end at the end of the migration period however will be subject to an end of year finalisation in April 2025.  If you apply for UC you’ll get an in year finalisation and some level of TP.

Your daughter could get a job for some of the hours she is not attending college. Which will be good for her, as this will massively increase her employability for when she seeks new employment using her new qualifications. And your daughter could then pay a small amount towards her living at home.

Most of the Supermarkets offer evening or weekend jobs. And they get staff discounts after a period of working. So that would be great help in reducing family food shopping bills.
The comments I post are personal opinion. Always refer to official information sources before relying on internet forums. If you have a problem with any organisation, enter into their official complaints process at the earliest opportunity, as sometimes complaints have to be started within a certain time frame.

Indeed, I had mis-read the original post about what age she is currently.
So my comments about a possible deferral were mistaken.
