Group Income Protection after leaving employment

A company I worked for had a Group Income Protection plan with Legal & General. In 2016 I made a claim, which was rejected. I appealed but they still rejected it because they say it was caused by 'stress at work' (whereas, in reality, underlying depression caused an extreme response to changes at work). I left that employment in 2020 but now have further medical evidence that points to depression being the problem. I've contacted my previous employer, who contacted Legal & General and apparently because I'm no longer employed there (and the company does not currently have a policy with them) they can't reopen the case. I would have thought that it's not my employment now that matters, but when the claim is for. I've done searches online and can't find any information but wondered if anyone knew where I stand legally? Thank you for your help!

Do you have a copy of the terms?

Its a corporate policy and so doesn't come under many of the protections that consumer insurance has

I don't have a copy. When I worked there and was going through the claim I asked for a copy but was told that because the insurance was between the company and L&G I couldn't have one
