My Lenovo ThinkPad laptop is over 10 years old and just stopped charging would that mean battery gone or charging cable faulty?

Depends.

If you have a multimeter you can see if the issue is with the charger.

If the battery is removable in the laptop then take it out and see if the laptop runs only on the charger.  If it does the charger is fine.

Signs of a defective battery may include it never going above 0% on the scale of charged no matter how long its plugged in for.

You may want to check if the charging pin/plug is broken on the laptop.  if it is then it doesn't matter what state the battery or the charger is in.

battery is removable in the laptop then take it out and see if the laptop runs only on the charger - hi just tried this and laptop wouldn't even switch on.

It's  most likely the battery.  You can get software which  you can run to test the health of the battery

If laptop is working with battery but discharging and doesn't even power on with battery is removed, sounds like a charger issue.
