How do I deal with an insurance company that is trying to use under handed means to deny claims

Options
Have put in a claim for an income protection claim. All medical information has been assessed and required three years account sent. Now the insurance company is requesting another year that was not previously requested and its after my claim commenced. This is a request that is not inline with my policy requirement. How can I deal with this.

  • Your policy says "we will only ever ask for three years of information under any circumstances"?  That would be very strange wording.

Usually they say something like "you will provide all information that we require to assess and process your claim".

Anyway, if you don't like it, you complain to the insurer.  If you don't like their answer to the complaint, you go to the Ombudsman.

And probably don't call it "under handed means to deny claims" in your complaint, because it almost certainly isn't.  Have they even denied your claim yet?

I don't see how it is that big a problem. You are obviously saying that for some reason your income ceased and are claiming for that fact. The accounts for after your claim was submitted will confirm the lack of income. So the fastest way of doing that would be to send them what they are asking for?

Are you only claiming for a period prior to that covered by the accounts which have now been requested?  If so, I can understand why you are questioning why they should be required.  However, if they aren't relevant to the claim they won't make any difference and providing them will avoid any unnecessary delay.
If the accounts are for a period to be covered by the claim they are most certainly relevant as they could affect the amount of any payment due.

Are you claiming for this extra year? If so, it may be very relevant.

Income protection is for loss of income.    It is logical and expected that they will check that you have a loss of income.

They'll naturally want to see the prior three full years to establish an earning pattern and then the party year to date to check how this year was performing against the pattern especially if the sum insured is close to the 65% cap or such.
