...and a large negative balance is often the reason why a prepayment meter was installed.

Have a word with a few plumbers on the GasSafe register.

Plus a local electrician ( or three)

Tradespeople have a habit of having differing opinions on the same subject, so best to have a chat with more than one.

If they’re prepayment meters are you sure they’re not simply out of credit?
I’d be wary of loading them with credit. They could well have a large negative balance attached to them.

Can you have a negative balance associated with a prepayment meter?
    (Just asking, not challenging!)
Yes. The standing charge continues to accumulate, even if no energy is consumed.

Theirs no standing charge with Utilita

Am I right that they charge 47p per KWh?
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

So with no standing charge, instead they charge a higher rate for the first couple of units per day, then a lower amount after that. So yes that could well be the amount for electricity for the first couple of units, then it will drop to say 20p per unit after that.
Indecision is the key to flexibility :)

  • We bought a repossession with no electric. I got the meter number at a viewing and was able to ring up and get the supplier from the DNO but I’m in NI so we only have one DNO! They were able to tell me the electric was still connected.

it was a prepay with £20 to pay, I was able to set up an account before we moved then once we got the keys I paid £50. There was a 32 digit code (first 16 to tell the meter it was a new customer) then 16 to add money. The removal guy ended up helping as we were in the dark with a torch as no lights with no mains.

We then flipped the main breaker with all the outgoing circuits off then put the lights on first. Thankfully all good except half the bulbs were missing. I’m an electrical engineer though so was happy to do this bit without a spark.
  • Also we got the £20 back as I got a picture of the meter and proved we moved on that date
