I look at a) what material the duvet cover is made from - 100% cotton
                  b) the thread count
                  c) where it was made
I prefer 400-thread-count Egyptian-cotton percale - made in Portugal. But if I want a cheaper alternative I will buy 200 thread count.
I always iron my duvet cover, pillow cases and flat sheet. I love getting into clean, ironed, crisp bedding.
    This ^^^ is me!

Flat sheets seem hard to get nowadays.
    I dislike fitted sheets.

@Pollycat - try Tesc0.  When we bought the duvet set I mentioned earlier, the only available option was a flat sheet.  I’ve since found a matching fitted sheet, but have noticed that they always have flat ones on sale.

    Thanks for that.
I don't like white, our bedding is cream - darker than ivory.
I've had a look and this looks interesting:
Tesco 100% Cotton Flat White Double - Tesco Groceries
as they do 'soft cream' but we need superking and they only do double.

I did buy bedding from Aldi, 100% cotton but the pillow cases and duvet cover became mis-shapen very quickly.

Best I've had was from Dunelm - Hotel Collection.

I found that if you don't use a fitted sheet for a while the elastic goes.
In one room, I have a duvet set that is nearly 20 years old it is a St Micheal's (M&S).
In another room, I have a duvet set that is also fifteen plus years old it is from The White Company.

Both M&S and WC duvet sets have many years left in them. I have no trouble getting flat sheet from the WC. I love the quality of their bedding.

On my bed at the moment - my second pillow - one of the pillow cases I had on my bed as a child. It is around 45 years old.

Dunhelm covers have zips which I found out after purchase but I prefer button. Bought some Christy ones at Homesense and matched up colour with easy care cotton fitted sheet and pillowcases at M & S

I use a thin, old duvet cover to keep my new feather and down duvet clean, putting a nice cotton cover over that. The old one gets a wash when there is a good drying day, Old cotton pillowcases add an extra layer, over the pillow protectors, to keep DH’s pillows clean.
I buy 100% cotton bedding in the sales or red-stickered at TKM to get better quality for my money.

I've got several sets from Dunelm and they all have buttons. I've never seen zipped ones from anywhere.

The only  zipped ones from Dunelm I have  are duvet protectors.

I recently bought a cotton duvet cover from IKEA. Really pleased with it, it has covered buttons.

I have a low tog stay fluffy duvet. I then have two cotton covers for it, both plain navy. (Bought as a pair )
On top of this I have a patterned (matching the curtains) quilted bedspread.
Its cosy in the winter, looks good and we can use either the quilt, the bedspread or lay on top if it's ever hot in the summer. It also means it can all go in the washing machine.

The pillowcases are 2 to match the duvet cover  and 2 to match the bedspread.

I noticed there were some half priced duvet covers online in cottontraders, I didn't even know they did bedding its all 100% cotton, I would always buy high thread count cotton. You spend such a long time in bed it's worth paying for some luxury.
