Gas disconnected due to SGN upgrading the pipes

This has been ongoing for some time.
I was visited approx. 6weeks ago and advised that my Gas Meter would need to be moved from inside to outside and that due to the location of the Meter it would require them to bring a Carpenter to lift and relay the flooring.  No problem for me.
Last week they came and asked it they could turn the gas off the following day and that the gas would be back on the same day.
Gas was turned off.  Visited by the person who was going to move the meter.  Told me that they needed a carpenter but they said they were unaware of this prior to arriving.
Gas is still not back on, this is day 6.  I use gas for heating, hot water, stove and cooker.
I have put a call into SGN and have been visited so hopefully this will be resolved soon.
My question is....Am I due any compensation for the excessive time I have been without gas?

So they turned your gas off because they were intending to move your meter?  When they realised they couldn't move your meter, why didn't they turn the gas back on?  Is it not possible for you to turn the gas on yourself?
  • Hi Mark-d
    Thanks for the comment.
No, I am disconnected so they can move my Meter.

You may be eligible for GSOS payments. This will be paid automatically but it goes on to your gas bill in the form of credit.
  • Thanks jefaz07.  I did check on Ofgem website and it seems to indicate the same.  Any idea how I ensure this happens as the Ofgem site said automatically too but what triggers that please?

When a service is cut off times will be recorded. When they’re re instated an engineer will put a date and time it was done along with a drop down box that says ‘gas at exit point’
This will filter through and they will calculate every 24 hours you were off gas. I think, GDN’s voluntarily pay £70 ish per 24 hours.
It’s a measurable output by OFGEM and will be documented in GD2.
So it will happen…how long I don’t know. But be aware this will go onto your bill. Not cash.

That's the rules and amount (sort of) for unscheduled disconnection.  GSOS doesn't apply like that when it's a planned disconnection, which an appointment to move a meter certainly would be.

If you have less than 7 days notice of a planned loss of supply it's about a £40 or £50 single payment.

OP's hope is that they count it as unplanned - then it's at least £60 (SGN pay £70) for each 24 hours (but they don't have to count the first 24h if they don't want to).

Although OFGEM have pushed (and I agree) for cases like the OP's to automatically count as unplanned and get paid from the first moment of interruption because it's clearly the supplier's fault.
