Replacement for Outlook/Outlook Express needed

Hi. Having installed office 2003 on my sons laptop it appears that I have used it as many times as I am allowed to!
I can't afford the 2007 one, so am looking for a free version of something that will work like outlook express to handle his emails etc.
I have downloaded Openoffice for the wp applications etc, but am stuck for the emails!
Any ponters please?? Needed urgently as possible!

    I have downloaded the program, but have obviously done something wrong in the settings as I cant get it send/receive emails.
    Does anyone know the correct settings I need to use for a sky.com email address?? I thought I had done it right, but........

    Thunderbird is a great bit of software, I switched to it years ago, bare in mind though that mozilla have decided (and in a quick glance I can't see anything to suggest a change of mind) that as a desktop application it doesn't fit in with there web-centric view of the world and are planning to cut it a drift as a comunity product or some such thing and therefore might not see much development in the future, it has always played 2nd fiddle to firefox as it is.

    Incoming: pop.sky.com
    Outgoing: smtp.sky.com
