Iphone reseller not honouring warranty

Options
Looking for some advice please

Back in May, my father in law bought a second hand Iphone 12 from an independent Mobile phone store (the small types that repair phones and other things). It's now developed an issue with the earpiece speaker.

My FIL went back to the shop as he was given a written warranty with the phone but they refused to fix it stating that it's water damage not covered.

They didn't open the device, so how can they prove (or I disprove) that it's water damage or not. Just seems like he's been fobbed off.

Any recourse?

Ignore the warranty, he'll want to use his consumer rights instead. As it's under six months since purchase it will be deemed faulty at purchase.Go back and challenge them on the 'water damage'. If there is no joy there and they can't show that it's water damaged, will be a case of the small claims court.
How much was the phone and how did your father in law pay?

What method of payment did your father in law use?  He will be using his consumer rights rather than warranty.

An iPhone 12 has a liquid contact indicator in the sim slot to identify if a phone has been exposed to significant amount of liquid. In clean state the indicator is white or silver, if it's been in contact with water it turns red. In older models it used to be in the headphone socket.

For Apple's own warranty it states its void if the LCI has been triggered however Apple do point out that statutory rights may still be in place despite the LCI.

Always check the LCI if buying a secondhand phone and seriously reconsider buying one that has already been triggered given it's an easy out of any future claim.

Given the phone is advertised as being waterproof, what is the indicator meant to prove?

    No iphone is waterproof.

Iphone 12 is water resistant to IP68 which is an improvement on earlier generations but not fully waterproof.
