What would the best route to drive : Calais to Nice

A friend is setting off on holiday soon, to the south of France, taking an old (but well cared for) campervan.

There are motorways, but many, if not all have tolls. he doesn't really want to be driving near Paris, which is probably pretty hectic at the best of times, but with the Olympics soon, possibly even worse

Which route would be the best .. perhaps a longer route, but avoiding the toll roads

Most route-planning software, even basic free stuff like Google Maps, will allow routes to be selected with optional criteria of avoiding tolls or motorways.

The most direct routes don't go near Paris so I don't think that's an issue.

Once you have established a general route online, use the old fashioned paper map to identify places of interest en route and make the journey worthwhile. That's something that sat navs and online mapping miss out.

    Have a good time.

Perhaps now is the time for your friend to acquaint themselves with a basic SatNav. A general local introduction and practice before they set off on their journey might be beneficial.
