And how do you propose to access to the Onedrive when you dont' have internet? ;)

Anyway Libre Office will open the files.

Obvious choice is to buy a cheap version of MS Office. Otherwise +1 for Libre Office, a free open-source alternative.

Libra, Open and Free Office are the main three, there are a few niche items if you're dealing with legal documents for example.

When you want alternatives to Access, Visio and Project it can be a bit more difficult

You can get 15 months of the genuine article for £36 and avoid the hassle of figuring out Libre

    Go with Libreoffice.

If you want to do any editing then you can change the default Save As format to Microsoft standards somewhere within the settings (could be in General). I did work for a large UK based charity which ran everything in Word and Excel but I had no issues using Libreoffice as an alternative.

The free apps probably cover greater than 95% of most users  needs with a slighy different look a d feel to them ( which is not necessarily  a downside).
The areas they can fail to meet needs are some of the advanced features, templates ( provided by other users for special activities and programmed code ( VBA ) though most of these are often not required for basic use by the casual user.
Download one of the suggestions and give it a go. For free what is there to loose?

Libreoffice does support a good chunk of VBA, though its not complete:

OpenOffice has been essentially unmaintained for a long time and should be avoided.
