With respect, reference "ABTA being completely useless" - did they knowingly fail to act on your behalf - or is your negative opinion because you didn't get the answer/outcome you wanted ?
If TUI are within their legal rights for compensation etc. then there is little or nothing that ABTA can do, assuming they didn't ignore your approach.
Did the £200 cover the additional costs mentioned in your opening message ?

Yes sorry, that was a bit of a generalisation. The reason I said that is because what TUI were offering vouchers to spend with them (and only valid on the main name under the booking) we asked ABTA to help us try to get compensation for the fact it was cancelled at the airport, and cancelled because TUI chose to use our flight for another purpose (the airplane was diverted to use on another route) , compensation for inconveinience of having to book more time off work to eanble holiday, "loss of enjoyment", etc.  and no, £200 didnt cover all the expenses (taxis, travel to rebook, extra time off work, holiday insurance, and more).

It felt like ABTA just didnt want to help or provide any advice on how we could progress a claim, and seemed to imply that we need to except what was offered, which is why i thought they seemed "completely useless", eg they didnt help me with any part of the process.

Anyway, I think TUI will probably go under soon, and probably rise from the ashes with a new name, but time will tell.

Isthat a bit of generalisation as well, since you didn't get what you wanted?

TUI raises profit guidance on record hotel, cruise demand

They don't seem to be in imminent danger of going out of business.

I'm just seeing and hearing so many complaints about TUI, it's just an opinion. Seems like they seem to get a lot of complaints, see https://www.which.co.uk/reviews/travel-agents/article/travel-agent-reviews/tui-aVXz07B6hEqq

Should I book a holiday with Tui?
No. Tui was in the bottom half of all seven tables it featured in, meaning that there are plenty of better alternatives, no matter which type of holiday you want to book.

I have been on TUI deals (going back to when Thomsons and Britannia airlines) for over 50 years - they've always had complaints, indeed a few from me, it's the nature of the business.
    Some justified, some trivial.
The chances of them going under are remote IMO.
Incidentally, I'm interested to know what the "better alternatives" might be, just out of curiousity

I would have a guess that since the demise of Thomas Cook then more people are using TUI.

Assuming there will always be a % of dissatisfied customers, then this as an absolute number is likely to rise.
Also, there is one less company to generate the “hard luck” stories so TUI stories will be slightly more common

That Which? piece, as clear from its URL, relates to travel agents rather than (solely) actual holiday providers, so includes many organisations who wouldn't generally be considered to be direct peers or competitors of Tui - it's not exactly rocket science that companies like Trailfinders and Kuoni, offering high-end customised travel services, will outperform a mass-market provider of pre-packaged products!

I'm not defending Tui as such though (and they do fare slightly worse than, say, Jet2 Holidays), but just observing that a study like that is unlikely to support the conclusion you appear to be drawing from it....

    Indeed.
You would really need a reliably researched opinion poll of TUI clients to determine the level of complaints raised  compared to the silent majority who are satisfied with their holiday/cruise/flight.
I suspect the former are very much in the minority as a percentage.
