I've had a leaflet from EGE who claim to be a one-stop shop for energy grants and 100% free. If they're free how do they make money. Anyone know anything about them and how they function?

They get a commission, from the installer, on projects that go on to completion.

And the actual grants are probably under the ECO4 scheme: https://eco4.org.uk/

better to find eco4 agents via your local council website and work through it that way, though all councils do is raid the inland revenue database to confirm that you are eligible fiscally for the grant and take a couple of hundred quid cut for their efforts (from the agent who in turns gets his money from one of the energy companies who in turn get the govn grant), would have been better to get a token issued from the inland revenue which the tax payer could then apply to the people doing the installation.

The Energy Company Obligation (ECO)  scheme is funded by the medium & large energy suppliers. Whilst the government (via OFGEM) have oversight of the funds it isn't tax payers money as such. Yes, everyone in the chain has their collective snouts in the trough and a lot of the money goes on referral fees (some would say "bungs"). Going to your energy supplier will cut some of the middle men out.
Local council can tap in to other funding on top of the ECO4 scheme such as Warm Homes grants and other local initiatives.

Is ECO4 the same as the Great British Insulation Scheme? I registered for that with octopus in February and never heard anything

Yes. I had assumed I was ineligible for ECO4 because, although I was under the income threshold, I wasn't in receipt of any of the listed benefits. However, the LA can vary the conditions to try to meet any energy saving targets they may have.

GBIS was originally called ECO+ - Not the same as ECO4, but still overseen by OFGEM and (I believe) funded the same way by the energy companies. The qualifying rules for GBIS is a little more relaxed than ECO4 and can target specific measures unlike ECO4 which is (generally) a whole house approach.

sorry, I get confused by these "government grants" that are actually energy companies giving some people back the money they take in bills, although in reality the govn did have to bung them a huge amount of dosh when the gas prices spiked... just to confuse things further, some of the energy companies throw in solar panels to the mix, some don't.

EGE will have leafletted the area in the hope of turning up those few people that actually do qualify for a grant.
