quad & duo core

hi to allim after a new desktop as the one ive got is about 6yrs old and using a 2000xp processor... can someone tell me what all this quad core & duo core is all about ...am i right in thinking that the duo is 2 processors running side by side and the quad is 4 running side by side...if this is not the case can somebody tell me....also what is all this talk of GHZ....im a little confused to say the least.......any help would be appreciated

    the ghz is the frequency the cpus run at, ie 2ghz is 2000mhz, if its a duo the it will have 2 running at that speed, quad will have 4.

    there has been substantial arcutecture changes in the last few years so a 2 ghz core cpu will spank a 3ghz P4 in most apps.

    very little application can use more than one core but having a two can be usefull if you have stuff like av and media players running while using you pc, the gains are less significant going dual to quad.
