Is Rome a good cheap hol centre?

Doing my annual search for the best possible holiday deal. Flights from Teesside, where I live, to Rome are really cheap in July when we want to go.

Is it realistic to fly there then get a train somewhere not too far away and pleasant to relax and enjoy a beat of real Italian food, wine and life?

If not any other suggestions from Teesside? KLM to Amsterdam is a good price too...

Many thanks for any kind suggestions.

Yes, get the good flight deal and head north of Rome a few hours and you will be right in Tuscany where you can chill to your hearts' content, drink wine and eat great food.

I would check for accommo first though as the Italians are off in July and they love to travel in their own country.

Many thanks Alison. We've booked, cost about £75 for the two of us, return. Now my mission is to plan a week in Tuscany so we don't lose what we've saved on travel on accommodation! Any tips gratefully recieved!

If you can, visit a place called San Gigimano which is just beautiful and is the first place I saw within Tuscany.

It can be busy during the day with tourists, but by night time, it's only locals and people staying in the handful of hotels there and has a lovely atmosphere.

Food is excellent and ice cream to die for (as is every where in Italy really)

Also, if you are in and around Tuscany, you aint that far from Florence (Firenze) which would be great for a couple of days.

Feel free to PM me if you have lots of questions but dont want to post them on the site.

  • Dear MiM

We stayed in a mobile home on the outskirts of Rome a couple of years ago. The campsite was called Camping Fabulous. It had a pool (run by a very strict attendant), a small restaurant and there was entertainment as well. To get into Rome was a bit of a trek - bus then train but it didn't take too long and it was nice going in to Rome for the day and then relaxing at night.

My favourite place outside of Rome was Tiberius' Grotto, it is near Sperlonga, a beach resort.

Hope this info is of some use as this is my first ever message.
    Enjoy your trip!

If you haven't booked Tuscany yet and, just to throw a spanner into the works :D If you go south by Train for a couple of hours you get to Sorrento. It's a great base for doing the ruins, there is Pompeii, Herculanium, Mount Vesuvius (sp?), a boat trip to Capri, the Amalfi coast (gorgeous big beaches) all within a short train/ boat/ bus ride. If you like a relaxing hol go for Tuscany but if you want to sitesee, go for Sunny Sorrento :D

Hotels HERE (I stayed in the campsite Santa Fortunata-Campogaio, it's a short bus ride from the town and has it's own private 'beach' it's actually a patio by the sea, no sand)
When life hands you a lemon, make sure you ask for tequilla and salt ;)

Watch out for pickpockets around Termni station. We were waiting for the Terravision bus with about 20 others and a group of young girls started touching people and distracting them within a few minutes they managed to get a purse out of a bag. Fortunately we managed to get it back. Also The Terravision bus drops you off at 1am at Termni. Our taxi driver charged 20 euros for a 5 minute trip. Stay in Rome for a few days its a fantastic city but it will be very hot in July.
