Bank of mum and dad - section 75?

Hi MSE forum…
helped my stepdaughter buy a car, spent £11,500 and used my TescoBank credit card. Huge issues with car, dealer goes AWOL, warranty not worth toilet paper, I tried to claim a section 75… to be told by Tesco, only applies if bought for yourself! If only I’d registered in my name rather than trying to help her mature as an adult and keep number of owners down.
Recent MOT has failed, they’d removed the catalitic converter
Can anyone suggest what might we do please? Or maybe Martin can pick up on a show and maybe TescoBank could be kind or at least highlight the “purchase for self” only for others, not just the £100-£30,000

oweri02Martin doesn't actively read the forum anymore, having sold the forum a few years ago. There is a guide on this MSE website though which does cover the limitations of Section 75 cover, including buying something for someone else:Are you still within the time limit to try a 'Chargeback' (120 days from purchase):An alternative route maybe to speak with Trading Standards in your area and obtain their advice regarding the vehicle. Is the warranty a 'dealer' warranty or was it issued by a third party (RAC, AA etc)? Makea formal complaint to them re a rejected claim.Hopefully others may have a few more ideas.1 -
yes it does matter because if the receipt is in the mother's name then she bought it and S75 is available
The fact that she then gave it to her daughter is irrelevant, also irrelevant is whose name is on the registration document
if however the receipt is in the daughter's name then as you say the link is broken0 -

has previously stated the legal owner is whoever is on the receipt not who is on the logbook
as long as the mother bought it in her name ie either receipt is in her name then she is the legal owner
the fact that some later date she either gave it to her daughter or loaned her to her daughter or her daughter was a registered keeper on the log book is irrelevant0 -

you are correct and that is why I asked whose name was on the receipt
if the daughter's name is on the receipt then the bank are correct and nothing more can be done
if the mother's name is on the receipt then the op can ask the bank to reconsider or raise a complaint2 -
The logbook is not proof of ownership of a vehicle.
