To ensure you retain your private plate, you must remove it from your old vehicle before you sell it.

Put that plate on retention now via the online system, remove the number plates and get a new set made and installed, the registration number will be provided via the online system, you will need to show it to whoever makes up the new plates.

If you are buying from a dealer they may be able to put your private plate on the new vehicle using the retention certificate.

As for insurance, you must tell the insurer of the number change of the old vehicle as you have to do that change before selling.

You have not mentioned the timeline for selling the old car, so you'll have to sort out insurance for both if there is an overlap.

I'm just wondering if I take my plate off the old car, will I then
1/ be able to transfer it to my new car on the day it becomes mine and insure it on my personal plate, or
2/have to insure the new car on its existing plate, then transfer my plate, then update the insurance again?

You also may have problems selling yours untill you have an updated V5 in your hands with the old/new registration.

In hindsight, it’s something you should have done a few weeks ago

    1. Yes, provided you have all the correct documentation for the retained registration.

In the short period of time you are talking about it is unlikely the insurance database will be updated so any search for that plate will bring up the old vehicle and you will certainly need to call your insurer and explain the situation and have the exact make and model of the new car.

As for the old car if you do not immediately SORN it and keep it off the public highway it will need the new plates put on it and must be taxed and insured.

Just been had a look at the web page which says if I retain my plate online it will take "immediate effect", which suggests I wait until the new car is mine, retain my plates online, swap the plates, insure my new car on my personal plate and explain it's a different car.

To sell your car you will need the V5 with correct details. Good news is if doing online, they come in under a week. But you will need to inform ins of change of details.

Same with your new car, you need the V5 before you can swap plates over. Unless it is a new unregistered car & then you can give the dealer retention cert & they can register car to your plates.

When taking a private plate off you do not need to sorn as tax carries on as normal, just need to get new plates made & update ins co with new reg no.

    Just done this...

I think I got the solution. I can get 3 day drive away insurance on my new car on its existing plate. Gives me 3 days to transfer my plate online to my new car, then transfer my insurance to my new car with my personal plate, as a phone call to explain. I'll hold on to my old car until I get the new papers before I sell it.

    1. Transfer registration A to retention. Cost £80. Put plate B on car 1, tell insurer.
    2. When V5C with plate B arrives, sell car 1 to dealer.
    3. Collect car 2.
    4. When V5C for car 2 arrives, transfer registration A to it, put plate A on it, tell insurer.

If car 2 is brand spankin' new, then the dealer can register it using registration A, so no need to transfer - but you need to tell the dealer before they start to register it.

You would be very lucky to get V5 in 3 days.
