Some discussion on Reddit, suggestion is that Microsoft have issues this AM with their Azure hosting environment.

EDIT : Now getting some news coverage

Yeah, there is a worldwide IT problem. No explanation yet.

    Beeb live coverage:

IT outage live updates: Planes grounded as mass worldwide issue hits airlines, media and banks - BBC News

We all imagine the world ending due to a war/pandemic/meteor/whatever but maybe it ends because IT fails and we lose access to food, power, transport etc.   :o

A friend could not drive their car a few months ago because it insisted it needed an update but then failed to install that update. It took two hours and many attempts before it worked. Scary stuff...

My car wouldn’t start the other day it needed a new condenser, dizzy cap and plugs, I was petrified…….took a week to source the parts and fit.

I love home companies message issues such as this

"We’re making some planned improvements. As soon as we’re finished you’ll be able to manage your account as usual."

Planned. Of course it was :)

I guess it's better than "We have absolutely no idea what the problem is or when it will be fixed. Our IT supplier is not answering the phone and our IT guy is on holiday."

Apparently Crowdstrike (Cybersecurity) have released a patch to fix the problem.

I'd love to read their Test Strategy document and see how they could have not experienced this with Windows devices.

HL seems to work no problem yet vanguard has been down for hours.
I take it they must use different packages.
I'd like to know what sort of record backup systems they have in place in case their servers are severely affected...

The issue doesn't affect / corrupt / remove data, it is 'just' an operating system issue affecting Windows, and I am sure they have appropriate data resiliency built in to their infrastructure.

The problem seems to be that a Crowdstrike software update is bricking Windows PCs. Crowdstrike have quickly fixed the problem but can't roll out the fix remotely because those bricked PCs need someone to attend in person. They have around 24,000 customers, many of which are large or very large organizations, so there could be millions of PCs affected. Just pity the poor IT folks all around the world who are probably cancelling their weekend plans...
