Canadaians living in UK passport issues?

Hi,
My husband was born in Canada to British parents, and has lived in UK for 60 years. He got a Canadian passport in 2022  as it was necessary to hold one to enter Canada.  His UK passport is now expired. This year we are visiting Greece, and he wants to use his Canadian passport if he can. Are there any Canadians living in the uk out there that can confirm this wont be a problem, and better still could point us to something that confirms this. People on another site have been really very helpful, but we still would be happier if we could see this written down somewhere? Gov departments havent really helped.  Many thanks in advance.

If his Canadian passport is valid and he is entitled to have one then of course he can travel to Greece on it.  Its not clear why you think there might be an issue.

My apologies I havent been clear - its the re-entering UK bit we were querying, and yes, it would be better not to have to buy  a British Passport.

Canadian passport holders are allowed 6 months in the UK.

Presumably on returning from Canada re-entered on the UK passport. In departing to Greece was never officially here. Is it worth the hassle?

The problem (if any) is that immigration may wonder why he's allowed to live permanently in the UK if he's entering on a Canadian passport.  It would help if he can get an "indefinite leave to remain" stamp in his passport when he returns.  Sometimes the individuals that are checking passports are actually quite human and understand these things and are willing to co-operate.

Does he still have his expired UK passport?  That might be helpful.  I've travelled on a Canadian passport (no alternative) but always take the original one from the 1980s which has my visa stamp in it.  Once I got a "indefinite leave to remain" stamp I was told I no longer needed to carry the ancient one, but rather something more recent with that stamp so it could be updated in each passport.  His expired passport would show that he has dual citizenship.

Of course none of this may be an issue if he's going through the biometric gates at Heathrow.  I sailed right through without even talking to anyone.

‘Indefinite leave to remain’ stamps are no longer a thing.

Whilst the eGates will be fine with a Canadian passport, if you get rejected for some reason then the person on the desk will probably want to know what your immigration status is. So have your expired U.K. passport  with you (or a picture of the passport page on your phone) and you’ll be fine.

If he has indefinite leave to remain or indefinite leave to enter in his old passport get him to keep that with his Canada passport at all times. I’m a US citizen but have lived in the uk for 50 years. My stamp is in a passport that expired 25 years ago but it still gets me in. If you get pulled just show that and they will stamp his new passport and write VIPP over it. (Visa in previous passport
The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run, and if you do that you will have enough to pay for something better.

He would have had right of abode, not ILR,  but that is cancelled as soon as he receives his British passport.  Carrying his BC passport,  albeit  cancelled, is evidence that he is a British citizen.  Is there a reason why he doesn't want to renew the BC passport?

My sister experienced this recently (although with a German passport). In practice she convinced the staff that she was British, but it would be wise to carry evidence of being a British citizen.
