Depends on the time of year you need a Gas Safe plumber/engineer - I needed a service on my boiler a few weeks ago. Local firm could arrange an appointment next day (I was looking at a month in advance). Summer time is usually a quiet time for these guys, so is the best time to schedule any work. Obviously, breakdowns are a different matter, but if you are "on the books", it is easier to get the company out to make a repair.
General plumbing work that does not involve gas can be done by any competent person, and he/she does not have to be Gas Safe registered - Replumbed the entire CH & DHW system myself, and have no issues about fixing leaks or faults with the control system connected to the boiler. If it requires removing the cover on the boiler, then I will call out a Gas Safe engineer (complies with warranty conditions).
Any language construct that forces such insanity in this case should be abandoned without regrets. –

They are obsessed with fitting new boilers every day. That's why they sign up for companies like Boxt. Even if Boxt take a big cut it's still far more lucrative than mending a boiler or fitting a new set of taps. If you ever need a plumber fast, whatever is wrong, just say you think you need a new boiler and they will be there fast.

Absolutely. The equivalent hourly rate for fitting a new boiler is just crazy when you work it out. Trouble is, it’s so well hidden in the total price, and there’s so little real competition, that it’s just accepted. People probably have no idea what a relatively small part of the total relates to the boiler, and how much to the labour.

I printed out all the parts that were needed. Came to about £1500. The quote was £3500. He said it would take a day to install. When I pointed out he would be charging £2k a day labour he reduced the labour charge considerably. Well worth doing.
