Charge for a membership I do not require

Hello, I am looking for some advice on whether a charge to my credit card is legal. I signed up to a service but on completing the sign up I noticed there was a £90 per year membership charge. Based on what I would purchase over a year I did not think it was cost effective so simply thought to myself I will just not pay the membership fee. I did not realise, my fault for not checking terms etc, I was then entering a 10 day free period at the end of which they charged the £90 to my card. On advising them that I did not want the service they only offered a 50% refund. I have 2 questions:
1. Is it legal to put a charge on my card without explicitly advising say by email that this would happen on a particular date, therefore giving me the opportunity to cancel beforehand.
2. Whether it is stated in their terms or not, If I have never used the service and request a refund do I have the right to a full refund?
Thank you

Thank you1. Yes2. NoTotally legal.Never sign up to a service before doing your homework and checking out the T&C's. Snap their hand off at the 50% refund.

1. Yes it is legal, as you agreed to the T/C. No notification is legally required on CPA's.
2. Not using the service makes no difference at all. Which could be why they offered 50% as a gesture of good will.
Take the 50% as there is no other way of claiming the money back.
make sure that you have cancelled it & keep a note of when this was done incase they debit again next year.Life in the slow lane1 -
