newbie to bank switching

Hi,
I am sure that all this has been asked at nauseam... so apologies, but if I start looking at old posts I will lose momentum.
I switch everything every year or so, but I have never done a bank account.
The procedure is easy enough, but what must I do to make it work?
Do I have to tell my employer? I have rental money as well, do I have to tell my tenant? Or is it all done automatically via redirect?
Lastly, what do i do with my old accounts?
I am looking at the first direct switch.

I wouldn't switch your main account, just open another current account with a different bank and switch that one to the one that is offering the switch bonus . The account that you switch from ( old account) will be closed automatically .2

well, I have two current accounts with my bank, but on the second one (which I very seldom use) I don't have the required DD. I have read about the 50p direct debit, but I am not clear what that is.0
