I'm going to hire a van for a couple of days next week from Enterprise who have a standard excess of £2000. They do offer their own excess cover but this is around £30 per day!

Can anyone recommend a cheaper/better alternative?

I was hoping for more of a personal recommendation.

MoneyMaxim | Compare Car Hire & Excess Insurance

Just select Car Hire Excess insurance and change the vehicle type to van.

Be aware that the van insurance specifically excludes any damage to the roof, (even if you take the £30 add-on), as this is the most likely damage to be caused by people who only occasionally hire a large van (and you can only ever insure against things that are unlikely to happen)

Take extra care in country lanes and if entering a gated property or carpark.

  • Pay the £30 per day. I didn't and ended up with a £2,000 bill, entirely my fault as I crashed the van.
I didn't take it at the time, as I drive vans almost every day of the year (and almost entirely without incident or even a scratch).

Look at it this way, you'd have to hire and pay the charge for 67 days before being 'in profit' if you end up having an incident.

I'm all for money saving which is why I declined the excess cover, I've probably hired for more than 67 days, so would technically be 'in profit'.
Nonetheless, that £2k charge hurt, lesson learnt, I now always pay the supplementary charge...

The OP is wanting to have cover just by buying a third party policy rather than the hire companies own. This would mean they had to pay the £2k up front but then can recover it from their insurer
