try starting system restore manually

If your Windows XP system begins acting strange, a typical fix is to use System Restore to remove any system changes made since the last time you created a Restore Point. However, what if the problem is so bad that you can't start Windows XP normally, or even start the system in Safe Mode?
The good news is you can run System Restore from a command prompt. Here's how:- Restart your computer and press [F8] during the initial startup.
- When you see the Windows Advanced Options Menu, select the Safe Mode with a Command Prompt option.
- Select the Windows XP operating system.
- Log on to your computer with an administrator account or with an account that has administrator credentials.
- Type the following command at a command prompt:
C:\windows\system32\restore\rstrui.exe
Note: This tip applies to both Windows XP Home and Windows XP Professional.Ex forum ambassador

I just found this on internet
ZoneAlarm Firewall (Windows 2000/XP)
A Real Disaster
Cons: This new version of ZoneAlarm 7.0.362.000 corrupts your index files and therefore makes your Windows Check Disk Utility hang for minutes. Also it destroys your Microsoft System Restore so that it can't be used. I have had problems with older versions like sometimes no internet connection, hindered defragmentation and now I had to format the hard disks of two computers and install all programs again except ZoneAlarm of course. Because of these problems and more ZoneAlarm is no reliable software that rather not must be used.
Have a look for a Zone alarm forum and out your question on there.

this shows you how to manually move files from the restore points to replace the corrupt registry hive
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307545
with a Linux boot CD you can skip a load of the steps
rename
c:\windows\system32\config\system
c:\windows\system32\config\software
c:\windows\system32\config\sam
c:\windows\system32\config\security
c:\windows\system32\config\default
to system.old, software.old etc
then copy over
From the Snapshot folder, copy the following files to the c:\windows\system32\config\ folder:
•_REGISTRY_USER_.DEFAULT
•_REGISTRY_MACHINE_SECURITY
•_REGISTRY_MACHINE_SOFTWARE
•_REGISTRY_MACHINE_SYSTEM
•_REGISTRY_MACHINE_SAM
and then
•Rename _REGISTRY_USER_.DEFAULT to DEFAULT
•Rename _REGISTRY_MACHINE_SECURITY to SECURITY
•Rename _REGISTRY_MACHINE_SOFTWARE to SOFTWARE
•Rename _REGISTRY_MACHINE_SYSTEM to SYSTEM
•Rename _REGISTRY_MACHINE_SAM to SAMEx forum ambassador
