Can you deposit cash at a HSBC branch for a First Direct account?

Yes you can, but you'll need a full branch with a counter as I understand that the paying-in machines no longer accept First Direct debit cards since they changed them to MasterCard.
You can also pay cash in at post offices.2 -

I deposited cash into FD at a Post Office, but I think there are limits on the amount you can deposit. Depends on the size of the Post Office branch and the amount of cash they are authorised to handle.I managed to deposit £500 at my local PO branch, and that was at the retail till and not the PO counter.1

You can pay in up to £3,000 per day and a total of £20,000 each year at the Post Office®. To deposit more than this you need to visit a Full Service Branch or Cash Service Branch at HSBC.
