Pretty much the same as my situation.

I see what @soolin was referring to by following her search, doesn't apply in my case.

The only place that VAT is mentioned is on the email with the bid confirmation, nothing in the listing or on the app.
The way the bidding is progressing there's very little chance of me winning anyway.

I was hoping to snag a bargain, but I'm not paying over 90% of the everyday price to a *Private* seller who's getting rid of an unwanted (BNIB) item.

As an aside, I've gone back through their feedback and I've now got a strong suspicion that it's a business posing as a private seller.

Another thought, I generally use a sniper for Ebay auctions, let's suppose that I sniped at £500 and then found that I was expected to pay another £100 VAT!

Thanks for everyone's replies but I'm hoping to lose this auction.
Should I report the seller to Ebay regarding my suspicions about them being a business?
    Move along, nothing to see.

Yes - report; if you don't then you're just letting them carry on.
If they're a UK private seller, they can't add VAT; there is no mechanism for that.
If they're overseas then VAT would be added on import (plus a courier handling fee), but then they wouldn't be a UK seller!
    I'd also withdraw my bid.
