The problem for vista and microsoft is that they messed up big time by making xp too good.

I use vista at work and xp at home, I'm more than happy with both, but I won't be "upgrading" my home pc's. XP service pack 3 is due soon, rumour is that it makes xp 10% faster. Another rumour is that the speed increase it gives xp is the reason it's so delayed.

Delayed? AFAIK it still falls within the expected MS development cycles. Betas are already being tested, hence the 10% speed increase reports. In fact the release candidate is already being tested and is publically available.

My dad's new Dell laptop with Vista Business on it is much better than my year-old one on paper (four times the RAM, dual-core processor, etc.).

However, I use Ubuntu Linux, which isn't even the quickest distribution out there, and mine leaves his for dust. I mean, a couple of minutes to shut down a brand new computer is taking the biscuit.

yeah, got to go with XP over Vista any day. Like the sound of SP3 and the better speeds too.
