Just a few glib comments since the use of the PC is not known...

If you are going to work the processor, 2 GB could be a bit small - hope the mb can take more. If you are not going to work the cpu why quad?

"...i can upgrade as time goes on...." Depeding on your time frame, this is often not the cheapest, or the best solution as newer, cheaper, faster will always be produced. Nothing looses it value as fast as a computer and other bleeding edge technology.

Not too many years ago people were able to buy Pentium upgrades on special boards to make them backward compatible at three times the cost of a new and faster processor. I've had Dells that had bespoke memory and the cost of upgrading the memory alone was slightly less than buying a new MB, with the equiv large mem and a processor that was two times faster and had all over a better spec.

Unless you are keeping that cpu working and your progs make use of Quad or run 4 different progs at the same time, then a £200 one may be sufficient? Also speed is not totally processor dependent and if the other parts like hdd are low spec the performance could very well be stifled.

On the plus side £400 does not seem overly expensive, but I have not been looking around for one either.

  • if using xp then yes it won't address more than about 3.25gb but to get the best out of a quad core cpu you're going to need more ram and tbh it's dirt cheap atm but then you'd be lloking at xp64 or vista both of which I wouldn't really reccomend.

are you really going to use quad core, very little software is multitreaded. the gpu makes so much difference and 8800gt's start at £140, it is double the 8600gt's speed in most stuff i have seen, in fact i saw someone say it was way faster than 2 8700gt's sli'ed/
  • agreed with epz re quad core not being fully used by software right now (doubt it'll be needed for at least 12 months)

12 month you recon lol, i got a quad xeon rig 8 years ago, guess how much stuff it could use back then, and an amd 64 was faster.
