I am after a greenhouse  ,either 6ft by 4ft or 7ft by 5ft ,have looked on line and the bulk of the ones available have terrible reviews ,either nearly impossible to erect or simply not worth the money ,i have looked at Rhino brand greenhouses and although they have glowing revues thet are very very expensive.
Can anybody recommend any other brand worth buying or is it a case of selling a kidney and buying a Rhino !

i have a rhino and would never buy another brand, nothing else compares.  A friend of mine did get something a bit cheaper, sorry don’t know the brand, but does regret not spending a bit more to get the Rhino.

Dunno, I think it's a bit bells and whistles. A bog standard aluminium one will cost you fity to a hundred quid secondhand. If you paint the frame before you put it up [metal paint for aluminium obviously] you're going to get something that looks a lot swisher than normal.
It all depends on what you want it to look like, do you have kids playing football near it [ in which case, polycarbonate or toughened glass] or do you just want it to grow stuff and not care about what they look like?
I have a bog standard aluminium one, 8 x 6, which the OH wants to paint the frame of black. I think it'll look quite smart when he's finished but it doesn't bother me as it is now. It is also sat on two lots of railways ties to make it higher so think about height too...[it isn't screwed to them, the weight of glass keeps it where it is except for one memorable supremely windy year where it moved two inches. I just pushed it back into place and it hasn't moved since.

Maybe you aren't reading the right magazines! A number of extremely expensive brands offer more than Rhino, but for a middle market product, general opinion seems to be they're best in class. That doesn't mean all others are useless. They might need better foundations and more care than many people give them, though. Similarly, it's wrong to compare a metal house with a wooden one. Having had both, I'd prefer a quality wooden greenhouse.
Taff's right, a serviceable aluminium greenhouse needn't cost a lot. The last one I built was offered on Freecycle. Best of all, it was still assembled, so I could label all the parts before dismantling and avoid ending up with a pile of bits and no clue how they go together.

That is the problem i envision with getting one second hand/free ,most people discarding greenhouses are doing so because the ones they have are falling to bits or have broken glass etc.
Now whilst i am still mobile and quite handy at fixing things at 74 maybe now is the time to take the easier route and buy something that will give me enjoyment without the heart ache ,i know this is the MSE site but as my wife pointed out what is the point of having the money to pay for something whilst we can still enjoy them rather than scrimp and save ,after all we can not take it with us.
    Thanks everybody for the replies/help.

In that case, why not go for a wooden one as Dusty says? They do look very very good, very traditional too if you have that sort of house/garden....If money were no object, I'd get one :)
Also, same advice as above, go for the biggest one you have the space and inclination for. I have never said I wish I had a smaller greenhouse....

I have not seen any wooden greenhouses listed anywhere ,i suspect they will be very ,very expensive ,i agree getting the biggest affordable and space wise makes sense .

Another vote for Rhino.  Got mine last year, and it's much sturdier than my previous greenhouse (which wasn't exactly cheap).  Easier to keep clean, as well, due to the use of glazing bars rather than 'W' clips.

Didn't realise until I got the catalogue that Rhino export to the Falkland Islands - and if they can withstand the winds down, there they will be able to withstand anything the UK can throw at them!

Thanks for the info ,yes they do look good even if they are the same price as a small second hand car :):):)
  • FYI, according to an email I had today, The Greenhouse People (search online) have a sale on now of ex-display greenhouses - seems to be postcode dependent, but might be worth a look...
