Accident Cost and Car Hire

Options
I bumped a car and decided not to go through insurance. I did damage to the vehicle door and to the wing which both need replacing and obviously re sprayed and the quote that he’s give is for the parts and 10 hours so £418 for door/wing and £36@ 10hrs labour and then £318 for materials. Does this sound reasonable? He’s also saying he needs a care hire for a week and expecting me to pay for that as well yet the hours vehicle is being worked on is only 10 hours so to my reckoning he’d only need a hire car for 2 days? If this quote is OTT would it be better for me to go through my insurance? I do have protected NCD. Many thanks

Well you still have to tell your insurance anyway so just let them handle it.

Parts and labour look reasonable.  Whilst its 10 hours work it won't be done at once.  The parts need ordering and delivering, the bodyshop will do the prep, the paint shop will do the painting and they need workshop time to fit the whole job, so it takes 10 hours over a few days.

Who actually decided not to go through the insurance companies?  If the other driver suggested it that would make me think they are driving without insurance.  If it was truly your decision to try and save on future payments you may find it will backfire if the insurance company finds out about it.

The way you've written the quote to me is very confusing but replacing two panels and what looks at around £1k or under is very cheap.

10 hours isn't 2 days... primer etc needs drying time, when the panel beater finishes doesn't mean the paint guy is sat there waiting for him.

The second issue is hiring a car for 2-3 days and then needing to extend it because the painter is off sick etc can be problematic and so normally contingency is built in. A week feels excessive but it's not 2 days either.

Ultimately if you are wanting to settle privately you probably want to not push them into the arms of credit hire/repair which will be vastly more expensive on both repairs and hire even if its a shorter hire.

Why do you not want to go through insurance ? That’s what you pay insurance for. What if there’s a complaint about the paint match or anything else ? My advice is let the insurance company deal with it.

    Expensive lesson.

My lodger's car was recently badly damaged in an accident. This was on a Friday, they didn't even inspect the car until Monday and they took three days to decide it wasn't worth repairing. So that's 5 days before any work has even been decided, assuming the car is repairable. I think two weeks hire car is reasonable. I would be putting this through my insurance - I'm always wary of people who don't want the insurance company involved.
It's actually been a bad month in this household - I backed into a VW camper van a couple of days ago and ripped off the bumper. The lady was OK about it and asked did I want to pay myself and I said no way, that's why I pay insurance. Told my insurance company the details, expect to hear no more about it ( until my renewal date  :#)

    Even without protected NCD
letting the insurance deal and taking the additional cost of insurance would work out cheaper??
your paying out well over £1000

the additional cost of insurance for the next 5 years surely will be under that in total.

I'd have thought an inspection on Monday was pretty good after an accident on Friday. I don't imagine the engineers are on call 24/7; probably 9-5 Monday to Friday.

It certainly not bad but it all depends on who the insurer is, who's doing the inspection etc. We owned our own garages as well as having network repairers. They were open 6 days a week and had an engineer on site throughout opening hours. Network repairers can have delegated authority for some values of repairs, if its outside of authority some submit digitally into a workflow system or they have an engineer visit regularly. If you're in luck the engineer is onsite on the day the car comes in.

Our record was same day, policyholder crashed outside our garages, our engineer agreed a total loss amount with them within the hour and a cheque was raised a few hours later.
