Query: Liability for Additional Costs Incurred due to Travel Agency Bankruptcy

I am seeking advice regarding a recent travel booking issue that has caused financial strain.
I booked accommodation at Mitsis Summer Palace through Travel Republic for £883.95. Unfortunately, upon arrival, I discovered that Travel Republic had cancelled my booking due ‘Meeting Point’ going bankrupt, without notifying me beforehand. Consequently, I had no choice but to book the only available room, a Junior Suite, at a cost of €1300 (approximately £1178.13), resulting in an additional expense of £294.18.
I have reached out to Travel Republic for reimbursement of this additional cost, arguing that their failure to inform me of the cancellation, as per their own terms and conditions, makes them liable for the incurred expenses. However, they have cited their booking conditions and suggested that I claim through travel insurance, which has already denied coverage for cancellations due to agency bankruptcy.
Could anyone advise on who is legally liable for covering these additional costs—Travel Republic for failing to notify me of the cancellation, or am I obligated to seek recourse elsewhere?

Did you book just the hotel via TR or was this a package/linked travel arrangement, perhaps with a flight or another serviced booked? If the latter, do you have an ATOL certificate?
FYI, I doubt TR cancelled your hotel reservation. More likely that the hotel did when they discovered Meeting Point had failed and payment not received. Whilst TR should have known to check all reservations caught up in the FTi/Meeting Point/You Travel issue - possibly the hotel just took action to cancel all reservations made with that agency. The hotel would not know the link to TR, only to Meeting Point, therefore not ability to tell TR.1 -
Have you spoken to TR since your travel insurer refused to pay out?
