HMRC have reinstated a direct debit without my permission!

I paid voluntary NI top ups for 5 years to ensure I have a full state pension. I received a letter a few months ago from HMRC saying that I no longer needed to pay any further contributions. I checked my state pension forecast and it is full now. So I cancelled the direct debit.
I then received a letter from HMRC saying I had cancelled the direct debit and they could no longer take my payments. I phoned them (and an hour later got through..) and they said don't worry it's a standard letter. Grr.
Yesterday I had a text from my bank saying that HMRC have reinstated the direct debit and to phone a number if there's a problem. I have checked, and indeed they have. How dare they! I don't want to spend another hour on hold to HMRC so has anyone got any advice for me please? They have not taken any money yet - the DD says next payment May 24. It's now July.

what did the bank say when you said to cancel it?

About to say....just cancel it your end, not sure why you would need to do anything different here.4

ultimately you are protected by the direct debit guarantee in any case0

+1 for just cancelling it yourself through online banking. A few clicks and it's done.

Hopefully if you cancel it it will cost HMRC money when it gets rejected by your bankI consider myself to be a male feminist. Is that allowed?0

Thanks for all your comments, sorry I didn't get notified of them. I phoned the bank and they agreed it was wrong of HMRC to reinstate the DD without telling me. They cancelled it again.0
