HMRC have reinstated a direct debit without my permission!

I paid voluntary NI top ups for 5 years to ensure I have a full state pension. I received a letter a few months ago from HMRC saying that I no longer needed to pay any further contributions. I checked my state pension forecast and it is full now. So I cancelled the direct debit.
I then received a letter from HMRC saying I had cancelled the direct debit and they could no longer take my payments. I phoned them (and an hour later got through..) and they said don't worry it's a standard letter. Grr.
Yesterday I had a text from my bank saying that HMRC have reinstated the direct debit and to phone a number if there's a problem. I have checked, and indeed they have. How dare they! I don't want to spend another hour on hold to HMRC so has anyone got any advice for me please? They have not taken any money yet - the DD says next payment May 24. It's now July.

About to say....just cancel it your end, not sure why you would need to do anything different here.

+1 for just cancelling it yourself through online banking. A few clicks and it's done.

Hopefully if you cancel it it will cost HMRC money when it gets rejected by your bank
I consider myself to be a male feminist. Is that allowed?

Thanks for all your comments, sorry I didn't get notified of them. I phoned the bank and they agreed it was wrong of HMRC to reinstate the DD without telling me. They cancelled it again.
