Insurance newbie advice

Hello,
I have decided to finally get a car, managed to spend most of my adult life avoiding it so far.
I am 40, had a license for 7 years. Never owned a car, was briefly a 2nd driver on a family members car that I drove for about 7 months, that was about 3 years ago. Only used my license for rentals when on holiday.
So I have 0 years no claims and it seems the only quotes I am able to get are around 3K mark.
Is this the cost it takes to start driving? The cars I was looking at are all in the region of 4-8K to purchase and the quotes on them are all about 3K annually to insure. Do I have any options here? Any advice would be appreciated, thanks in advance!

Where have you been getting quotes from?
Is there a family member with driving experience you can put down as a named driver, this often reduces the price.
What type of cars are you getting quotes on, maybe steer away from the popular 'new driver' cars (fiesta, corsa etc)2 -
Maybe you need to take the same route as those trying to insure a 19yo's car. Get something that is really boring to drive. Alternative may be to get someone else listed on the insurance. Sometimes having a spouse, parent, etc also on the insurance makes you look more stable.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on Debt Free Wannabe and Old Style Money Saving boards. Any other negative factors you're having to declare other than 0 NCD? Prosecutions, claims, points? Live in London? Professional sports person? CCJs?
Doing a random search on a 2012 Polo for a married driver renting their home in a town in the middlands on confused.com comes out at £460 with no NCD

Thanks for the responses, I do live in London. I guess this bumps up the insurance quotes?
I have no prosecutions, claims or points on my license. Not a professional sports person, no CCJs.
It could be that the cars I checked were on the higher end to insure? To be honest, just been looking at 2012+ Mercedes and BMWs
Just run a quote on a 2014 Polo and it is the cheapest I have come across so far at 1100!0 -
I think that sort of premium sounds about right for a driver with 0 NCD living in London. Higher premiums for higher risk cars which BMW and Merc are especially if parked on streetRemember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.2

Well, there's the explanation for your high quotes; and living in London will be a big negative.0
