Debit cards don't have the same level of over all protection
    I never said they did..
I said Chargeback protection which is exactly the same between Debit & Credit.

For me it's an old-fashioned habit - at nearly 67 I think I'm entitled to one old-fashioned trait. You pay your bills when they come in and don't keep debt (poor, working class upbringing). I could leave it, but I don't. As far as I am concerned the direct debit is a safety mechanism for me going doo-lally and forgetting to pay.
There's nothing wrong with your approach, but you could make more money (as this is MSE!) by paying off the card in full by direct debit every month while leaving the money in a savings account. Just a thought, not a criticism. It's how I do it - money is in Kroo, pays 4.35%, interest paid every 1st of the month, move the money to current account the day before my CC is due. Extra few quid every month is nice.

Sam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:

People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.
