Can't access Word or Excel on desktop

When I try to go on Word I get the following message

Microsoft
Updating Microsoft 365 and office - please wait a moment

Then I get

WINWORD.EXE Application Error
X the application was unable to start correctly (0x0000142)
Click OK to close the application
OK

but nothing happens and I still can't access either Word or Excel

Anybody know how to fix this please?
