Some years ago we changed insurer but forgot to tell the new insurer about a windscreen claim.  They wrote to us and asked for an explanation within 14(?) days or they would cancel the insurance.  We resolved it with them before they cancelled
The problem in this case is that they've said they won't insure vehicles with bull bars and presumably the OP doesn't want to take them off.
    Yes - I know that.

The point of my post - which you've only partially quoted - was to ask the OP what stage he was at and whether the insurer had already cancelled the policy or whether the OP could still beat them to it.

I was giving our non-declared windscreen claim as an example where something had not been declared and we had been warned that the policy would be cancelled, but we had been able to put it right before it was cancelled.  If our new insurer had instead refused to accept our explanation and had refused to cover us, we'd have withdrawn our application for cover before our new insurer had cancelled it, and would have gone to a different insurer.

In this case it would appear from the OP's later response that they waited and allowed the insurer to cancel the policy rather than taking action themselves.  I'm not sure why they waited...

Because they already told me they were cancelling, so it seemed too late to do anything about it. Only since then have I discovered that other people have avoided being permanently labelled just by cancelling.
Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.
